Prequels?

I've been working on Spirits of Abaddon 2 (Sanctified) and hit a weird snag. Having spoken with my editor, I think I've come to a conclusion. However, that conclusion involves writing a sequel to the Spirits of Abaddon/Blood & Fire series. We're talkin'... EONS back in terms of time frame.

What do y'all think? What are your thoughts on prequels that greatly predate the existing series? Especially when it means that one of the main guys had a tenuous relationship with an antagonist. Thoughts??

I'm always curious about the before we meet the characters. I think it would be fun and interesting to see how they were then versus how they are now.

Me, too. Thanks, hun!

As long as you make the reader glad they read this book and not regret having spent time on the ones already out, I'd go for it.

I like Prequels especially if they involve characters as a reader I grew to love. I always like knowing what they were like before we knew them in a series. :)

I think it's fine. Or rather, I think it's just like any other book -- is it good? will I enjoy reading it? There you go.

Steven Brust wrote the first few books in the Vlad Taltos series essentially backwards. It was like he started with book five, then wrote four, three two, one, then picked up with six and went from there. It was a bit odd but it worked and I love the series. And actually, it was kind of fun seeing him clash with people I knew he was eventually going to be good friends with. :)

What they said. ;-} Seriously though, if the characters are ones I love, I don't care what order the books are in. I just want more. If the prequel is set before the lifetime of the characters that I've come to know and love but furthers the background world they live in and will be an important factor for future books, then I'll give it a shot.

I love a prequel that goes into the far past of an established series. Reading one after reading the current books is like doing literary archaeology. :D
